A great crowd followed Jesus because they saw the signs He performed. When evening approached in that remote place, the disciples urged Jesus to send the people away to find food, but Jesus told them to give the crowd something to eat. They protested that it would take a fortune to feed so many. Andrew mentioned a boy with five small barley loaves and two fish, but asked how far that could go among so many. Jesus told the people to sit down, about five thousand men, besides women and children. He took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them, along with the fish, as much as they wanted. When all had eaten and were satisfied, Jesus told the disciples to gather the leftovers so nothing would be wasted, and they filled twelve baskets with the pieces. Seeing the sign, the people wanted to make Jesus king by force, but He withdrew. This miracle, the only one recorded in all four Gospels, reveals Jesus' compassion for the crowd and His power to provide abundantly from very little.
