Story Summary

After feeding the crowd, Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him across the sea, while He dismissed the crowd and went up on a mountainside to pray. During the night the boat was far from land, buffeted by waves and a strong wind. In the early morning hours, Jesus came to them, walking on the sea. When the disciples saw Him, they were terrified, thinking it was a ghost, and cried out in fear. But Jesus told them to take courage, saying it was He, and not to be afraid. Peter answered that if it was truly Jesus, He should command Peter to come to Him on the water. Jesus said, Come, and Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw the strength of the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink, he cried out to be saved. Immediately Jesus reached out His hand and caught him, asking why he doubted. When they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. Those in the boat worshiped Jesus, saying, truly You are the Son of God.
