“Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, give I to you. Don't let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.”
Consider when Jesus said this. It is the last night before his arrest. He knows what is coming, and he knows his friends are about to fall apart. This is not advice from a calm season.
He distinguishes his peace from what the world gives, and the difference is worth naming. The world's version of peace is circumstantial. It arrives when the test comes back clear, when the money lands, when the conflict resolves. It is real, and it is completely dependent on conditions. Which means it can be taken back at any moment by a phone call.
His peace is not built that way. It does not require the trouble to end first. That is why it can be given on the worst night of the week to people about to walk into the hardest days of their lives.
This is the halfway point of these three weeks, and it is worth being honest about what peace is and is not. It is not the absence of anxiety. It is not a permanent mood you unlock and then keep. It is a Presence, and presence can be with you in the middle of something unresolved.
Some days it feels like calm. Other days it feels like nothing more than being able to take the next step, which is also peace doing its work.
He says he leaves it with us, which means it is already given. Not something to earn by getting your faith right. Something to receive, again, today.

Prayer
Jesus, You gave peace away on the hardest night of Your life, which means it does not depend on our circumstances. We receive it now, unresolved as things are. Guard our hearts from fear. Be present with us, because You are the peace. Amen.
