Day 15Anxiety & Peace

Trust Is a Practice

Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don't lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

World English Bible

We tend to treat trust as a feeling. Something that either settles over you or does not, and if it does not, you assume your faith is deficient.

But look at how the proverb frames it. Trust, do not lean, acknowledge him in your ways. Those are all things you do. Not moods you wait for.

That reframing helps enormously if you are anxious, because it means you can trust God on a day when you feel nothing at all. Trusting is choosing to act as though he is who he says he is, before your feelings agree, and often while they are still arguing.

Do not lean on your own understanding is worth sitting with too. An anxious mind is convinced that if it can just think this through one more time, it will find the angle that makes it safe. So we lean harder on our own analysis, and the leaning is exhausting, and it never actually produces the certainty we are after.

The promise is not that he will explain the path. It is that he will make it straight. You may not get the map. You get a next step, and someone who knows the terrain.

Practice it small. Trust him with one thing this morning, out loud. Then again this afternoon when it comes back. Trust is built the way any practice is built, through repetition, mostly on days when it does not feel like much.

Talk About It Together

Talk about actions here, not feelings.

  1. What are you trying to think your way to safety about?
  2. What would trusting God look like as an action this week?
  3. Where do you need a next step rather than the whole map?

Tonight’s Challenge

Pick one situation and say plainly: God, I am trusting You with this. Repeat it every time it comes back today.

Prayer

Lord, we have been leaning on our own understanding and it is wearing us out. We choose to trust You today, whether or not our feelings follow. Take the situations we keep analyzing. Make our paths straight, one step at a time. Amen.
